Sergeant Major John Murphy joined the 91st Regiment at Longford, aged 18, 1827; Sergeant 1832; Sergeant Major 1842; distinguished himself during the voyage of the Abercrombie Robinson to the Cape of Good Hope, 28th August, 1842 when a Reserve Battalion of the 91st Regiment, including 90 women and children, was safely disembarked from the vessel during a hurricane; discharged at Chatham, 1848 (M.S.M. and granted an annual annuity of #20); appointed Warder of the Tower of London by the Duke of Wellington, 17th July that year,he died in the Tower, August 1852.
