3 parts in one volume, 2 (444 x 295mm). Hand-coloured engraved title, portrait, and 147 hand-coloured double-page maps, hand-coloured woodcut title surround to the 'Parergon'. (Title soiled at margins and with repair to verso, just a few maps with repairs to gutter of lower margin or with small repairs on verso, occasional discolouration at margins and old dampstains.) Contemporary blind-stamped calf, covers with arabesque cornerpieces, upper cover with central lozenge surrounding title 'Theatrum orbis terrarum', the lower cover with lozenge surrounding an allegorical female figure with sword in hand (rebacked, some restoration to covers).
The Theatrum was first published in 1570 while the last of the 31 editions appeared in 1612. This edition contains 115 maps in the first part, and 32 maps in the 'Parergon'. The index leaves from an earlier edition (a4-6,b-e6), are bound in at end. Koeman III Ort, 29.
