OVIDIUS NASUS, Publius (43 B.C. -17 A.D.). Metamorphoses, argumentis brevioribus... collectis expositae: una cum vivis singularum Transformationum iconibus in aes incisis. Antwerp: Plantin press, widow [of Christophe Plantin] and Joannes Moretus, 1591.
Oblong 8o (102 x 129 mm). Italic and roman types. Engraved title, medallion portrait of the author, printer's device, and 178 full-page numbered engravings designed and engraved by Pieter van der Borcht (no. 176 signed by him). (Small dampstain to upper inner margins of first 50 or so leaves, blank corner of A4 torn away.) Modern calf; slipcase. MOST DECKLE EDGES PRESERVED.
First edition of these prose synopses of the Metamorphoses with the engravings by the Flemish artist Pieter van der Borcht (1545-1608). The engravings are reverse copies of Virgil Solis's illustrations for the 1563 Frankfurt edition. Adams O-504; Brunet Supplément 112; Hollstein Dutch III 100, 200-377.
