The second book to utilize Picasso's skill as an illustrator, Saint Matorel was written by Max Jacob who had been an early supporter and friend of Picasso on his arrival in Paris. Mlle. Léonie, who is the subject of two of the four illustrations, appears in the book as the hero's great love. The other two subjects used were a still life La Table(B. 20) and Le Couvent(B. 22) which shows the monastery of St. Theresa in Barcelona to which Matorel retires.
