Private A. Green was wounded during the defence of the outpost at Modderfontein on 31.1.1901.
109 men of the South Wales Borderers occupied an isolated outpost at Modderfontein Nek, 22 miles from Krugersdorp. On 29.1.1901 their numbers swelled to 200 with the arrival of a convoy under Captain Magniac, Imperial Yeomanry. Smuts laid siege to the post at midday on 30.1.1901 with a large force and two guns. The firing continued through the day and night and, one attack having been repulsed, the enemy stormed the advanced posts in heavy rain and darkness at 1.30 a.m. on 31.1.1901. The South Wales Borderers did not surrender but were simply overwhelmed. At 4.30 a.m. the Boers had captured the post after 43 hours of fighting. The Borderers' losses were 21 killed and 40 wounded and the remainder taken prisoner.
