PALLADIO, Andrea (1508-1580). Five Orders of Architecture, revised by Colen Campbell, London: S. Harding, 1729. 8° (312 x 196mm). Engraved architectural frontispiece and 31 numbered engraved plates by Fourdrinier, 5 engraved plates by Fourdrinier and Campbell, woodcut headpieces, initials and some diagrams (occasional spotting, some marginal dampstaining towards the end, one neat repair, some pencil trials). Contemporary mottled calf (rebacked, corners repaired).
'This book represents the beginning of a failed attempt to supply an accurate and complete English edition of Palladio' (RIBA loc. cit). Book I was first printed in 1728, partly as an advertisemnt and partly to test the market. When it was reprinted in 1729, the earlier title page, dated 1728, was retained and five new plates by Campbell were added. The other three books of the series were not completed.
