PAPWORTH, John Buonarotti (1775-1847). Hints on Ornamental Gardening, London: R. Ackerman, 1823. 8° (257 x 171mm). Hand-coloured aquatint frontispiece, 28 aquatint plates, the first with transformation overlay, the other 27 hand-coloured (spotted, some offsetting from plates). Contemporary half calf, spine gilt (joints cracked, corners rubbed).
FIRST EDITION. This work originated as a series of 34 articles, each consisting of a plate and its accompanying description, which were printed in Ackerman's Repository between 1819 and 1821. Papworth chose 28 of these plates to be included here and added a revised text with a new introductory essay. The plates in this copy are watermarked 1823 but other copies dated 1821 are known.
