FIRST EDITIONS of the accounts of both of Park's expeditions (he died during the second, fortunately having just sent his journals to Gambia). "Park's career was short, but he made the first great practical advance in the opening-up of Central Africa...until the publication of [his book] hardly anything was known of the interior of Africa" (PMM 253).
