5 parts in one volume, small oblong 2o (187 x 286 mm). Engraved general title, three letterpress sectional titles; 4 engraved garden views, 1 engraved allegorical plate and 172 engraved plates. (Some occasional pale spotting, few marginal repairs.) Nineteenth-century diced russia, by C. Kalthoeber, with ticket on front flyleaf, edges gilt (rebacked, a bit worn). Provenance: Massachusetts Horticultural Society, Stickney Fund (bookplate dated 1884).
THE FRENCH TEXT ISSUE OF ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS AND INFLUENTIAL OF THE EARLY FLORILEGIA. There is great discrepancy between copies in the number of plates and their states, but the present copy is made up as follows:
I. [Printemps]: Engraved general title with integral circular portrait roundels of Dodoens and Clusius [Utrecht, apud Ioannem Ianssonium, 1614], as in Hunt; title in French [Utrecht & Arnhem, ches Crispian de Pas, & ches Ian Ianssoon], with 'Description des Couleurs des quatre saizons...' on verso, followed by eleven leaves of description of plates in first four parts, numbered 1-41, 1-20, 1-25 (+ 2 'Nota') and 1-12 [signed [A]-F2]; engraved garden plan; 52 engraved numbered plates, INCLUDING 11 PLATES OF TULIPS AT END, Latin text on versos, 29 plates with insects added, at least 42 with backgrounds added (first ten plates with repaired marginal wormtracks, just touching borders of first four).
II. [Este]: letterpress sectional title in Latin [Arnhem, ex officina Ioannis Ianszonii], 'Index Aestivus' on verso; engraved garden plan; 20 engraved numbered plates, all but one with Latin text on verso, 3 with insects added.
III. [Automne]: letterpress sectional title in Latin [Arnhem, ex officina, Ioannis Iansonii, 1616]; engraved plate 'Epigramma' depicting flora embracing a cornucopia of flowers; engraved garden plan; 27 engraved numbered plates, all but the final two with Latin text on verso, 12 with insects added (rust-holes within images of plates 11 and 15).
IV. [Hivers]: engraved garden plan; 12 engraved plates, all but the last with Latin text on verso, 2 with insects added (rust-holes within images of plates 3 and 10).
V. [Altera pars]: letterpress sectional title with 'ad lectorum' on verso, engraved additional title [Formulis Crispiani Passaei et Joannis Waldnelii]; 61 engraved plates with Latin descriptions on versos of all but one plate, 21 with backgrounds and insects added (few marginal repairs, just within images of last four plates).
