PATCH, Thomas. The life of Fra Bartolommeo della Porta, a Tuscan painter, with his works, engraved from the original pictures... Florence: 1772-.
2° (465 x 370mm.). Title and text in English and Italian. 2pp. letterpress text with engraved headpiece on the first page containing the title/dedication to Horace Walpole. 47 plates, comprising one soft-ground etched plate printed in ochre, 28 mezzotint plates printed in brown (one double-page), 16 engraved plates and one mezzotint plate. Contemporary mottled half-sheep (upper outer corner defective). Provenance: S.T. (inscription dated May 1st 1787).
A FINE COPY AND RARE.. The introduction mentions the engraver's intention to publish 'five numbers each number to contain 24 prints'. This plan was apparently not realised. The plates in this copy are numbered I-XXIV, then one unumbered, then I-XXII. The text is largely a description of the first 24 plates. Bound at the end of this collection are 11 plates after Giotto's frescos in the Church of the Carmini, preceded by an engraved portrait of Giotto and 2pp. of letterpress introduction headed by an engraved dedication to Bernardo Manetti, all by Patch. A similar collection, including Patch's Life of Masaccio, but excluding the unnumbered plate, the second suite of 22 plates and the Giotto plates was sold at auction in 1972, the B.L. has a collection including both the works on Masaccio and Giotto. Sold as a collection of plates not subject to return.
