Gondolo & Labouriau and Chronometro Gondolo
The following four lots, numbers 199 to 202, represent an impressive selection of Patek Philippe pocketwatches and wristwatches made for the Brazilian firm of Gondolo & Labouriau, Patek Philippe's chosen retailer in Rio de Janeiro from 1872 until 1927. In order to be awarded with the distinguished "Chronometro Gondolo" designation, the movements for these watches had to fulfil the following four criteria: a cam wheel regulator, allowing very precise but practical adjustment of the watch, "moustache"-shaped lever, wolf's tooth winding and gold wheels for the wheel train.
The famous retailer was probably best known for high quality pocketwatches in various sizes but is also often associated with the large rectangular curvex-shaped wristwatches with "explosion" numerals. "Gondolo" wristwatches in tonneau-shaped and square cases, such as lots 200 and 202, are lesser known as made in extremely small series only.
