Post Lot Text
First illustrated edition, with 80 colour woodcuts by Joan Miró, some with collage. A total of 233 blocks were cut by the artist in collaboration with Enric Tormo, who spent the better part of ten years on the project. The issue was limited to 130 copies on vélin d'Arches. The author's own copy, signed by Miró, one of 24 not for sale, with extra sets of the woodcuts on Chine and Japon nacré and a set of colour separation proofs for woodcut 25. Extra-illustrated with a proof impression of a colour woodcut inscribed by Miró to Paul Eluard, proof of another cut with collage and heightened in colour, and a large original drawing in colour crayons, inscribed by Miró to Dominique Eluard, the poet's wife. "One of the most triumphant feats of book illustration in our century" (Soby). Miró remarked that the project allowed him to see what it was to make a book and not merely to illustrate one, and that "a book must have all the dignity of a sculpture carved in marble". Inventive inlaid bindings by Martin, the second volume incorporating the original block for woodcut 70.
