EARLY CALIMA GOLD PECTORAL
CA. A.D. 200-400
Of kidney-shape with a central repousse mask with closed eyes, adorned with a large sheet gold nose ornament embossed with the face of a growling puma, ears pierced with gold wire for two ear discs, and the border incised with panels of repeated geometric motifs; pierced twice for suspension at the top.
The gold objects found in Calima are marked by the excellence of their hammering and casting techniques. Thin sheet metal would be molded in high relief, as in this pectoral, to be later decorated with repousse designs and dangling elements. Characteristically these works are large and made of relatively pure gold.
