PESTALOZZI, Johann Heinrich (1746-1827). Wie Gertrud ihre Kinder lehrt, ein Versuch den Müttern Anleitung zu geben, ihre Kinder selbst zu unterrichten. Bern and Zurich: Heinrich Gessner, 1801. Small 8° (169 x 106mm). Engraved portrait frontispiece of the author by H. Lips after M. Diogg (frontispiece cut down and mounted, inner gutter of title and following leaf strengthened, title a little thumb-soiled, some light spotting, stronger in first half). Late 19th-century half calf (spine faded).
FIRST EDITION of Pestalozzi's major work. It is "an an exhaustive exposition of Pestalozzi's principles with especial emphasis on the three R's. The most important and forward-looking of his ideas, which he stressed continually in practice as well as precept, was that the true method of education is to develop the child, not to train him as one trains a dog. The pupil must be regarded as more important than the subject and the 'whole man' must be developed" (PMM). PMM 258.
