Howson commented on his own work, 'The common man is in my work and will always be in my work'. Painting the man in the street and the common man, in all his variety, dominates Howson's work from 1986 onwards. The present work is from a sub-series generated by his painting The Heroic Dosser, (1987, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art) (see R. Heller, Peter Howson, London, 1993, p. 27).
