Lot Essay

August Belmont (1813-1890) had been a clerk in the Rothschild's Frankfurt office before he travelled to America where he became their New York agent. It had been intended that he should establish a business in Havana but when he arrived in New York in 1837 he found himself in the middle of a financial crisis and took it upon himself to sort out the business of the Rothschild's agents in New York and having completed this, settled in New York. He was a frequent visitor to the Rothschilds in London in the 1860s and emulated their collecting passion.
