In the present work we see Bonnard tackling on of his favourite themes, that of the model caught in the studio in an informal pose. The patterned wallpaper at the upper left, a motif that had occupied Bonnard since the early 1890s, is here used both as an index of the palette as well as a reminder of the enduring influence of Japonisme on his art. The predominant warm earth colours at the upper half of the composition, picked up in the fleshtones of the sitter, give way to lighter tones and blues towards the lower half of the canvas.
