We are grateful to Dr. Peter Sutton for confirming the attribution on the basis of a photograph (written communication, 31 August 2006). Dr. Sutton will include the present painting in his forthcoming catalogue raisonné on the artist.

Traditionally the present lot has been considered to be a self-portrait, however, Dr. Sutton believes this not to be the case. For comparison, see de Grebber's Self-Portrait in eastern dress, of 1647 in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.

In a letter, dated 26 April 1988, Professor Albert Blankert has also confirmed the attribution on the basis of a photograph.
