Lot Essay

Pieter van Bloemen was the eldest of three brothers, all painters from Antwerp who settled in Rome in the late 1680s. They joined the community of Northern landscape artists known as Bentveughels, 'Birds of a feather', where Pieter was given the nickname Lo Stendardo, or Standaart, in reference to his pictures of battles and soldiers filled with banners. Later he returned to Antwerp where in 1699 he became Dean of the Guild of Saint Luke.
