Lot Essay
A study for the Saint John in the lower left corner of the Ascension painted for the High Altar in the Cathedral at San Sepolcro, datable to the first decade of the 16th Century, P. Scarpellini, Perugino, Milan, 1984, no. 153, fig. 249. This figure has previously been associated with an apostle in the Ascension now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Lyon, P. Scarpellini, op. cit., no. 74. The differences in the arrangement of the Lyon Ppostle's robe, particularly at his midriff and across his shoulders, and the presence of an embroidered hem, would however suggest that the Bodmer drawing is for the altarpiece at San Sepolcro.
