PINELLI, Maffeo (1736-1785) -- Samuel PATERSON (1728-1802). Bibliotheca Pinellinana. A Catalogue of the magnificent and celebrated Library of Maffei Pinelli, late of Venice ... London: Robson & Clarke, & Edwards, 2 March 1789.

PRICED in a contemporary hand. In 1788, London booksellers James Edwards and James Robson bought the Pinelli library of which an inventory catalogue compiled by the custodian of the Bibliotheca Marciana, Iacopo Morelli, had appeared the previous year. Edwards and Robson put the collection up for sale by means of this catalogue, a shortened and adapted version of Morelli's, which was done by by Samuel Paterson, another London bookseller and auctioneer. Although it was not a great success financially, the sale, which brought in £8,637 was the first auction of foreign books on a large scale to be held in London. Pollard, p. 92; Pollard & Ehrman 260.
