PERUVIAN PAINTED PLAQUE
SOUTHERN ANDES, CA. A.D. 1200-1400
The concave rectangular-shaped section, possibly from the interior of a large jar (?), the surface painted in semi-resinous pigment by hand and probably brush, in cream, black, red, saffron and lime green with four registers of stylized, standing human figures with arms raised alternating with four-legged animals.
It has been hypothesized that the imagery on these terracotta fragments has religo-magical connotations involving agriculture and nature worship.
