POTTER, BEATRIX. Sister Anne. Philadelphia: David McKay Company, . 13 black and white illustrations by Katharine Sturges (the frontispiece is a repeat of that facing p. 136). 8vo, original blue cloth, decorated and lettered in gilt, top edge stained yellow, slight rubbing to extremities; dust jacket, several large chips, other wear and fading. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, with the frontispiece wrongly placed facing p. 7. Quinby 31; Linder, p. 432; V & A 1714. Rare.
This story was never published in England. It is Potter's version of the tale of Bluebeard. Katharine Sturges, an American illustrator, was chosen to do the illustrations and they provide a wonderful dark and brooding quality which complements the story. Potter especially liked her portrayal of the women and she writes to Mr. McKay, "Do thank Katharine Sturges from me for interpreting just what I meant!" (Linder, p. 325).
