Engraved view of the Piazza of Siena on single sheet (498 x 685mm). Dedication on large ribbon supported by two putti, six inset views depicting carnival chariots, title and legend cartouche below main image. (Remargined long upper margin, few holes not affecting the image, old vertical fold.) Provenance: Biblioteca del Principe D.Pietro Gabrielli. Roma 1790 (inscription in ink in lower margin).
This fine view of the Piazza of Siena as seen from the North-East shows the festivities organised by the Conversazione del Casino for the arrival in Siena of Violante of Bavaria, Duchess of Tuscany. The festivities included a parade of allegorical chariots made for the occasion by Siena's Contrade and the famous horserace called Palio. The engraving is dedicated to the prince Giovan Gastone, heir of Tuscany.
