PTOLEMAEUS, Claudius (fl.c.127-180). General Ptholemei. Strassburg: J. Schott, 1513 or 1520.
Woodcut map of the Ptolemaic world, (440 x 600mm). The map showing the ancient world surrounded by 12 windheads, with the 'Mare Congelatum' (the Arctic) set above. Window mount.
An attractive and fine Ptolemaic map from the 'Waldseemüller' edition of Ptolemy's Geographia published by Schott in Nuremberg. Waldseemüller and Matthias Ringman had been working on a new edition of the Geographia from 1504 preparing a series of ancient maps of the world based on Ptolemy togehter with a new series of 'modern' maps. Despite finishing the woodblocks sometime around 1510, the project was taken out of their hands, probably due to the lack of a patron to fund the printing. Schott was asked to do the printing of the work by the lawyers Aeszler and Uebelin, who had taken control of the project, leaving off Waldseemüller's name. Shirley 34.
