Trooper J. Kleinschmidt enlisted in the Bushveldt Carbineers on 5.7.1901 and served with them during the period of the atrocities. He stayed on when the unit was renamed the Pietersburg Light Horse on 1.12.1901 and was discharged on 30.6.1902, one month after the signing of peace.
Confusion existed as to whether a Medal should be named to the Bushveldt Carbineers or Pietersburg Light Horse and consequently they can be found named to the wrong unit. In Kleinschmidt's case he was one of the minority who served in both. As many of the Bushveldt Carbineers and Pietersburg Light Horse had served in previous units it is rare to find a Medal named to one or the other. Only 57 Medals were issued named 'Bushveldt Carbineers' or 'Pietersburg Light Horse'.
