    Lot Essay

Private H. Hooper was killed in action at Senekal on 29.5.1900.
The Grenadier Guards led the assault on the strong Boer position at Biddulphsberg and suffered grievous casualties, not only from Boer fire but from a vicious veldt fire which, it was alleged, was started by a Yeomanry Officer carelessly dropping his cigarette. The Grenadier Guards own a magnificent oil painting of Lieutenant J.A.C. Quilter carrying wounded Guardsmen off the blazing veldt.
