M. Laffaille, Raoul Dufy, Catalogue raisonné de l'oeuvre peint, vol. I, Geneva, 1972, no. 264 (illustrated p. 224).
Stockholm, Liljevalchs Konsthall, Fran Cézanne till Picasso, September 1954, no. 112.
The present work is part of the important Avenue du bois series, which marks the first appearance of the horse as a central subject in Dufy's oeuvre, prefiguring the artist's characteristic interest in racing by several years. The years between 1906 and 1909 constituted a period of stylistic transition for Dufy in which he continuously assimilated the lessons of Cézanne and cubism, as well as the strong colour theories of the fauvists, while moving towards a more personal aesthetic. L'avenue du bois displays Dufy's preoccupation with a systematic composition in which form and colour combine to produce a vibrant and fluid work.
