[RATHBONE, Hanna Mary, née REYNOLDS]. The Poetry of Birds, selected from various authors...by a Lady. Liverpool: George Smith and London: Ackermann & Co., 1833.
4° (230 x 170mm.), 21 hand-coloured engraved plates by Rathbone. Contemporary half russia gilt (head and foot of spine and corners rubbed, lower joint repaired).
FIRST EDITION containing the correct number of small, finely coloured illustrations as listed in the index. The American ornithologist J.J. Audubon was a friend of the Rathbones, visiting their home, Green Bank near Liverpool, on many occasions during the 1820s. Audubon records on October 2nd 1826 being asked by Mrs. Rathbone for a thumbnail sketch of the Wild Turkey, which he duly provided in twenty-three minutes. Unfortunately the sketch was never included in Mrs. Rathbone's work. Nissen IVB 756 and Mullens & Swann 485 both in error call for 22 plates.
