Lot Essay

We are grateful to Sabine Giepmans of the RKD for endorsing the traditional attribution to Nooms first made by Horst Gerson in the late fifties. She points out that the artist is recorded as having travelled to North Africa, which may explain the somewhat exotic feel of the present view which in all likelihood depicts an African coastline. Other pictures by Nooms that exude the same North African atmosphere and include similar rafts in the foreground are in the Staatliches Museum, Schwerin (inv. no. 1147) and in the Maritime Museum, Greenwich (no. 42).
