RESTORATION DRAMA -- [DAVENANT, Sir William (1606-1668)]. Macbeth, a tragaedy. With all the alterations, amendments, additions, and new songs. As it's now acted at the Dukes Theatre. London: for P. Chetwin, 1674.
4° (207 x 143mm). Typographical headbands. (Title soiled, with several closed tears to inner margin and a repaired hole at lower inner corner, verso of title with 42mm. wide lamination along inner margin, A2 with two holes at upper margin affecting numeral on recto, I3 and I4 a little stained, without the final blank.) Early 20th-century dark blue morocco, double gilt fillets, spine with raised bands and gilt lettering, gilt board edges and turn-ins, marbled endpapers, gilt edges (bowed).
FIRST EDITION OF DAVENANT'S VERSION. In the list of Dramatis personae on A2 recto, the part of Macbeth is played by Thomas Betterton (1635?-1710) and that of Lady Macbeth by Mrs Betterton, formerly Mrs Saunderson. The new version probably owed much of its success to their performances since two other editions were printed in the same year. Macbeth, Shakespeare's shortest tragedy, was first performed at the Globe in 1606. It was included in the 1623 folio, and first printed separately in 1673, just one year before the appearance of Davenant's adaptation. Bartlett 165; Jaggard p. 381; Wing S-2930.
