2 works in two volumes, 4° (273 x 210mm). Uniform near-contemporary speckled calf, covers panelled in gilt, the flat spines divided into six unequal compartments by gilt fillets and roll-tools, blue morocco lettering-piece in the second, black morocco in the fourth compartment, the others with repeat decoration of a single large gilt urn tool. gilt turn-ins (spines rubbed, some light scuffing to covers).
A FINE SET, including 'a very important' (Blackmer) account of Athens:: 'the most detailed that had yet appeared' (op.cit.). 'Chandler was introduced to the Society of Dilettanti by Robert Wood and commissioned to undertake a tour of exploration in Asia Minor. This was the first independent mission of the Society ... and its members also included Nicholas Revett as architect and William Pars as artist ... They embarked in June, 1764 and returned November, 1766. ... The Travels are based on Chandler's journals and with their publication "Chandler immediately established himself as the preeminent traveller in Greece. Nothing so detailed and nothing so good had been published since Wheler and Spon ..." (Spencer, p.164)' (op.cit.). (2)
