Roelof van Vries joined the Guild of St Luke in Leiden in 1653, and in Haarlem in 1657, before entering the prestigious Guild of Amsterdam in 1681. This landscape painter, working in the circle of Jakob van Ruisdael, was greatly influenced by the works of Cornelis Gerritsz Decker and Salomon Rombouts (see lot 60). His later works are often grander but darker than those painted at the beginning of his career. The staffage in his paintings were sometimes painted by Johannes Lingelbach or by Adriaen van de Velde.
