Lot Essay

In 1891, Roger Fry went to Italy and then Paris to study painting. He began to lecture on art and became a critic and author. Fry made his debut in art criticism with a review of George Moore's book Modern Art for the Cambridge Review a year before he painted the present work.
In 1894, when he painted River Scene, Punt in a Stream, Fry began lecturing on Italian Art for the Cambridge Extension Movement.
