Ronald Sears (1919-1941)
Ronald Sears and his indentical twin Leonard were born on September 20, 1919 at Leytonstone, Essex. They both studied at Leyton Art School and the Southwest Essex College of Art in Walthamstow. In 1934 Ron joined Lintas followed by Len who had been trained as a letterer, in 1935.
Much of their time was spent painting, sculpting and designing. They painted portraits, often of each other, family and friends, views of London and the South France. They were both precociously talented and very entertaining. L Roy Hobdell was a particular friend as was Angus McBean who shot their double portrait shortly before the War.
In 1939 the Sears twins both volunteered for the Navy and were posted to the Mediterranean on the cruiser HMS Neptune. The captain allowed the twins to continue their painting on board ship. The twins died on December 19, 1941 after the Neptune hit a mine, killing all but one of the 1500 men on board.
