Ronald Searle was born in Cambridge and studied at the School of Art there from 1936 to 1939. He served in the army during World War II and on his return settled in London and began working as a humorous illustrator and caricaturist for books and magazines, including Punch and Lilliput. The predominant mood of his humour is frequently offset by sinister or macabre overtones. He has developed a fanciful and striking individual graphic manner and since the 1950's has been a houshold name in Britain.
