Ladies of Courage describes the struggles of women to gain recognition in American public life. Page 263 describes a Christmas party hosted by John and Franklin, Jr. for children of women who belonged to unions affiliated with the Women's Trade Union League. At this party, FDR read aloud Dickens' Christmas Carol, as he did to his own children and grandchildren every Christmas Eve.
