Lot Essay

The Emanuel Hospital in Tothill Fields, Westminster was founded in 1594 by the will of Anne Sackville, Lady Dacre, who was second cousin to Queen Elizabeth I. The hospice was also run as a school and Emanuel School, as it was later called, moved to the disused premises of the Royal Victoria Patriotic Fund Orphanage in 1883. For a note on the artist see lot 149.
