Lot Essay

A similar enamel of the Tsar, mounted on a box, was sold Christie's, Geneva, 19 November 1996, lot 313.
Portrait miniatures simulating carved cameo portraits or other representations in profile were highly fashionable in early 19th century Russia. Such works are recorded by Pietro de Rossi and Anthelme-François Lagrénée (see A. A. Karev, Miniaturn'ij portret v Rossii XVIII veka, Moscow, 1989, colour pl. 113).
