10 parts in one volume, 4o (227 x 178 mm). 41 engraved plates including 22 folding plates (2 folding plates torn, the following signatures misbound: part I A-H after 7*4 in Thesaurus animalium, part VI *2 after M2 and (A)-(D) after Ettmller's letter.) Contemporary calf (some wear to spine ends and edges).
Provenance: Dr. Martin van Winck (ownership inscription on front free endpaper).
FIRST EDITION. Ruysch's description of his anatomical preparations which were exhibited in several small rented houses in Amsterdam. This "cabinet" became a major attraction for foreign visitors. The collection was subsequently sold to Peter the Great. The engraved illustrations (mostly by Huijberts) which accompany the text "deserve special mention for their whimsical, almost surrealistic, quality: quaintly posed skeletons surrounded by stuffed monsters, strange reptiles, dried plants and sea creatures" (Heirs of Hippocrates). Included in part one is Michael Ernst Ettmller's Epistola problematica... with separate title-page, Amsterdam, 1715. The third part, not included in this collection was published in 1728.
