SAINT NICHOLAS THE WONDER-WORKER
RUSSIAN (PALEKH SCHOOL), 18TH CENTURY
Saint Nicholas holds the open Gospels, blesses with his right hand and he is dressed in sumptuous attire, decorated with crosses, seraphims and imitation pearls. He is flanked by Christ and his Mother, who are presenting him with the Bible and the Bishop's stole respectively. There are four family saints on the border. The faces are painted darkly but the colourful garments are rendered with pastel colours.
