[SAUERWEID, Alexandre Ivanovtich (1783-1844). L'Armée Saxonne représentée en 30 feuilles. Dresden: Henry Ritner, 1810.]
Small 2° (326 x 220mm). 30 engraved plates by Samuel Granicher (1758-1813) after Sauerweid, hand-coloured by Bötticher. (Lacking the engraved title, first plate becoming detached, a little light spotting and marginal browning, slight thumb-soiling.) Earlier 20th-century half calf and marbled boards. Provenance: Alfred Lorentz, Leipzig (bookseller's label).
'Suite très rare,' comments Colas, 'dont on ne connaït pas d'exemplaires complets.' Born in Courlande, Sauerweid made a reputation as a painter of battle scenes and horses, besides working as an engraver and etcher. He died in St. Petersburg on 25 October, 1844. This copy of his work lacks only the title-page which, unusually, also names the engraver and colourist; the plates themselves are not signed. Colas 2640: not in Lipperheide.
