Cook 2435; Holmes 36. " /> SEWARD, Anna. Elegy on Captain Cook. To Which is Added, An Ode to the Sun. London: Printed for J. Dodsley, 1780. 4<V>o (264 x 211 mm). Disbound. FIRST EDITION. Of this elegy a contemporary reviewer wrote in The Gentleman's Magazine , "With the assistance of the Muses, she has raised a trophy worthy of the memory of one of the greatest men this or any age or nation has produced." Holmes felt less national, or literary, value to the piece: "A modern reviewer would be more likely to refer to it as 238 lines of rather turgid verse." Nevertheless, Ms. Sewards elegy remains an early personal appraisal of the merits of Captain Cook in verse. Mitchell Library Cook 2435; Holmes 36. | Christie's
