Actor/Director John Cassavete's first film as a director. This independent production took three years to complete and was partly funded by Cassavete's performances as television's Johnny Staccato. This film was a breakthrough in American cinema. It told of the effect of racism on an already fraught relationship between two black men and their sister, (two of whom were lighter skinned), passing for whites. Cassavete's individual cinematic style has influenced many directors like Martin Scorcese and Robert Altman, to name a few. Shadows was released in art-house cinemas only and material on this film is extremely rare.
