SHARPE, Henry (1832-1895) and Claude W.WYATT (1842-1900). A Monograph of the Hirundinidae or family of Swallows. London: Taylor & Francis for the Authors, 1885-1894.
2 volumes, 4° (315 x 250mm). 103 hand-coloured lithographed plates by Wyatt, printed by the Mintern brothers, 26 maps (with areas of distribution hand-coloured), 15 double-page letterpress distribution charts. (A few leaves with small marginal tears or soiling.) Original cloth, t.e.g. (largely disbound, particularly in vol.II).
FIRST EDITION. "A detailed monograph of all the known species of swallows, with fine, hand-colored plates by the junior author" (Zimmer). This copy was 'perfect-bound' with the inevitable result that many of the leaves are detached. Both Zimmer and Nissen record a variant title with Sotheran's given as the publishers. In addition, Nissen records a cheaper issue with fewer hand-coloured plates. Nissen IVB 868; Zimmer p.578. (2)
