In the jiwei year of the Hongzhi era (1499), Shen Zhou travelled to Yixing and toured the area with his friend Wu Lun. They took a boat trip to Zhanggong Dong (Zhanggong Cave) and passed Yanhua Xi (Yanhua stream) en route. This scroll was painted to record the trip, as was another handscroll, Zhanggong Dong tu, now in an American private collection. (See Chen Zhenghong, ibid.)
