Lot Essay

While the main part of De Vlieger's painted oeuvre consists of marine scenes, the majority of his drawings are landscapes. The marine artist Jan van de Capelle owned more than a thousand of De Vlieger's drawings, possibly the entire content of his studio. The present drawing was sold along with another drawing of similar format and technique in the 1935 and 1986 (lot 84, illustrated) sales.
