Lot Essay

Related to one of the two angels supporting Saint Joseph in the lost picture of Saint Joseph elevated to Heaven known through an engraving by Michel Dorigny dated 1640 (J. Thuillier et al., Vouet, exhib. cat., Galeries Nationales du Grand Palais, 1990, p. 130, illustrated. A drawing by Vouet for one of two putti in the sky is in the Louvre (B. Brejon de Lavergnée, Dessins de Simon Vouet, Paris, 1987, no. 103).
