Lot Essay

East was born in Kettering in Northamptonshire, and many of his works can now be seen in Kettering Art Gallery. He studied at the Glasgow School of Art, and then in Paris, under Bougereau. Knighted in 1910, he became a Royal Academician in 1913, and travelled extensively in Japan, France, Spain, Italy and Morocco. His landscape style owes much to the Barbizon painters, Corot, Daubigny and Rousseau, mostly notably in his distinctive use of pale browns and greens.
