Lot Essay

This is a study for Wilkie's Royal Academy exhibit of 1821 (private collection). Wilkie's ability to weave narrative into domestic genre was a profound influence upon painters of the nineteenth centruy. Sophie Anderson treated the same subject, but in an Italianate setting (see The Forbes sale of Victorian Pictures & Works of Art, Christie's, London, 20 February 2003, lot 290.)
